The activities below can help reinforce the material in this What’s Up ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to test anxiety and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more. ® Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Pages 2 and 4—Tests: views and reactions After students complete pages 2 and 4, invite them to share their answers. Start a class discussion about people’s views of, and reactions to, tests. Ask these and other questions to get students thinking critically about this issue: • We live in a society that places a great deal of value on “succeeding” in visible ways (e.g., going to the best college, having the best job, having a fancy car and home, etc.). How do you think this affects the pressure students put on themselves with tests? • How easy is it to fall into “end-of-the-world” thinking about how well you do on a test (“If I don’t do well,…”)? How do you think this affects your ability to do well while taking a test? • Do you think students tend to compare how well they do on tests with their worth as a person? If yes, how accurate or healthy do you think this is? Explain that there are no right answers at this point, and it’s OK if they aren’t sure yet. Explain that thinking about it will help them: • become more comfortable thinking about how to solve these kinds of problems, and offering helpful ideas to others who may need them • read the workbook more closely, because they’ll be reading with at least one goal in mind—to find out how to apply the information to each case.
