Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to bullying and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 5—Discussion Ask students about bullying in their school or other schools they’ve attended. Prompt the discussion by asking these questions: • Have you ever witnessed an act of bullying? • What type of bullying was it? • Where did it happen? • Did anyone report the incident? • Do you think bullying is a problem in this school? Ask students not to use names when discussing bullying incidents. Wrap up the discussion by asking students what they think they can do to help prevent bullying. Have students research news stories where bullying may have played a part in a tragedy at another school. (They can use the Internet to search.) Have them print out news articles. You may want to display them on a bulletin board below an anti-bullying heading. Have students write appropriate slogans and vote on one to use as the heading. You may also want to have students examine the role of media violence (on TV, in music videos or computer games, etc.) in these situations. If media violence was discussed as a possible factor, have students note it below the displayed article.
