Page 2—Getting started Use this page to introduce how learning is important in everyday life, not just at school. Ask students to think of different daily uses of reading, math and science. Review each example on this page. Ask students if they think the example is related to reading, math or science. Explain how each example is related. Talk about how libraries are a great place to learn. Review the different sections of libraries and programs they offer. Ask students if they have been to their local library. Make sure they know what hours the library is open. Encourage them to visit the library and join a reading program there. As a class, visit your school library. Discuss research skills, such as how to: • locate and gather information • take notes • list sources. Have students practice these research skills by finding reading material on a subject they enjoy. For example, if a student chooses the weather, he or she might find a magazine about tornadoes and a book about changing seasons.
