Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® Summer learning is fun! Page 2—Why is summer learning important? As a group, discuss how the children feel about learning over the summer. Be sure to point out how children can learn just by doing fun and interesting activities. Have students start a poster about the importance of learning and practicing skills over the summer. As they learn ways to practice their skills, encourage them to add examples (using words, drawings or photos from old magazines) to the poster. Ask the children to name some of their favorite places to go during the summer. Write these on a chalkboard, flip chart or large sheet of poster board or paper. For each location, ask the children to describe what they do at these places. Then, have them think of 2-3 ways in which that activity involves learning. For example, children may list an amusement park as their favorite place to visit and describe going on rides as what they do. Learning activities could be figuring out how much money they will need to go on 10 rides or using a map to find the location of their favorite rides.
