Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 2—Parents Page Every We Wonder includes a guide for parents. Encourage parents to use this guide to help their children get the most out of the activities in We Wonder. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.3 Supports Counting & Cardinality Standards: CCSS.Mathematics.CC.K.1 CCSS.Mathematics.CC.K.5 Page 3—Numbers are everywhere! Have children draw places where they might see numbers. If they’re not sure what scene to draw, use the illustration on this page for some ideas. For example: • A football field is a place where they might see shirts with numbers on them. • Malls are places they might see prices. • A library is a place they might see a clock. In their drawings, ask them to include as many examples of people using numbers as they can think of—for example, people sitting in numbered seats at a football game or checking out 5 books at a library. As you look over their drawings, ask them to explain how people in the drawing are using numbers. Encourage children to look for people who are using numbers the next time they go somewhere with their parents. For children who can count beyond 10, ask them to count all of the items in the picture consecutively. • Use this page to help children learn the concept of “more” and “less.” For example, ask, “Are there more red flowers or blue flowers? Are there fewer yellow flowers or red flowers?” • Use this page to help children understand basic addition. Have them add 5+3+2, using different objects they find in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to learning numbers and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more.
