The activities below can help reinforce the material in this What’s Up ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to anger and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. You may begin by explaining that anger is a normal feeling, but it’s important to learn how to respond to anger appropriately. To get the discussion going, you may want to ask the following questions: • What makes you get angry? • When you’re angry, how does your body feel? Do you notice a change? • What do you do when you get angry? Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.1c,d CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.7.1c,d CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1c,d Page 5—What makes you angry? Learning how to manage anger involves being able to recognize your anger “triggers.” Have students use a daily log (as suggested on page 5 of the workbook) to write down when they feel themselves get angry. They should use the log for at least one week. Have students write down: • what happened • how it made them feel physically and emotionally • how they acted on these feelings (for example, did they yell, withdraw or act out?). When the week is up, ask students to look for patterns and brainstorm ways to avoid those situations in the future. For example, if a student frequently gets angry about not understanding homework, perhaps he or she could join a study group or ask his or her teacher(s) for extra help.
