Explain that germs are very tiny creatures that are found in all kinds of places. They can live on our skin and inside our bodies. They can live in other places too, like on doorknobs, pencils, crayons and even pets. Germs are so small that we cannot see them, but they are there—and certain ones can make us sick if they get into our bodies. Luckily, we know ways to help stop germs! Stopping germs helps us feel good and stay healthy. To help children “see” germs, rub a pencil or small ball with a nontoxic glue stick, then cover it in glitter “germs.” Then pass the object around the class, until each child has touched it. What happened? How can we get these germs off? Try out any ideas the children suggest (such as with a paper towel or with just water), but end with the entire class removing them the right way: by washing hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds, then drying with a clean towel. Ask children to choose one of the animals pictured in this activity. Help them write, draw or dictate a pretend story about the animal. Encourage children to name their animal and create a story about how it became sick or stayed healthy. Have the children work together to improve each other’s story. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more.
