The activities below can help reinforce the material in this What’s Up ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to Internet safety and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. ® Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 2—A Web-less world The Internet is a useful tool in essentially every aspect of a student’s life. Take an informal, anonymous classroom poll to reveal which Web uses students value most. For example, write the following category labels on the board: • schoolwork/formal learning • connecting with peers • music, games or related activities • miscellaneous information/other. Hand out slips of paper. Ask students to choose one category, and write it on the paper. Collect the votes and share them with the class. Write the totals on the board, and have students record results in the form of a graph. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.1b,c,d CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.7.1b,c,d CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.8.1b,c,d Pages 4-5—Internet dangers Most students may have a general awareness of online dangers. However, they may be surprised by some of the specific facts given here. Have students read these pages quietly to themselves. Then have each write a paragraph about one fact on these pages that he or she did not know before now. The paragraph should express: • the danger to which the fact (most) relates • what he or she had thought or heard about the danger before reading this fact • why the fact stood out for him or her. If appropriate, have students pair up and each read his or her paragraph to the other.
