Have students write a letter to a pretend friend who is thinking about trying a cigarette. They can include reasons why they hope the person will decide not to smoke. Then, have students read their letters to the class. Ask him or her to talk about the types of toxic chemicals found in tobacco smoke, and the percentage of smokers who die from smoking-related illnesses. Also consider asking him or her to give a mini-lesson on nicotine and addiction. Have students prepare questions in advance. Have students make their own posters to highlight parts of the body that are affected by smoking and display them in class or throughout the school, if possible.
