The activities below can help reinforce the material in this What’s Up ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to growing up and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. ® Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 6—Interview Ask your students to interview a man about his experience growing up. This could be a family member, family friend, coach or someone else they know. Have them ask these questions:  • When you were growing up, did you think that other guys were growing faster or slower than you? Did this bother you? • How did you get along with your parents when you were growing up? • How did your friendships change? • What was the hardest part of growing up for you?  • What was the best part about growing up? • If you could give any advice to guys going through puberty now, what would it be? Questions can include: • What are some consequences of having sex? • What are some good things about waiting to have sex until you’re older and in a committed relationship, such as marriage? • How many sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can you name? • What are some ways to show affection for someone without having sex? Have your students distribute and collect the surveys in school. (Make sure completed surveys are anonymous.) Then have the class tabulate the results and create a report describing their findings.
