Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® We know about electrical safety! The activities below can help reinforce the material in this Know What? ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to electrical safety and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. Page 2—We all use electricity. Ask students to come up with a brief story about what their lives would be like without electricity. Record the story, printing clearly. This will help students recognize words. Next, have students “write” the story by copying what you wrote. Ask him or her to address the following topics: • what electricity is and how it is generated • what a circuit is • what conductors and insulators are • how electricity gets to homes and businesses • the dangers of electricity if it is not used properly • what students can do to stay safe around electricity • what ground fault circuit interrupters are and how they help us stay safe from electricity. Encourage students to come up with questions ahead of time and ask them when the representative is done speaking.
