Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for The activities below can help reinforce the material in this Who Knew? ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to HIV and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. Page 2—Getting started Have a class discussion about HIV. Start by asking students what they wrote for the first part of the question on this page. Write the responses on the board or a large sheet of paper. After you finish the workbook, show the class the paper again. Together, make any corrections to each statement. Help students use the library or the Internet to find answers to any questions not addressed in the workbook. Invite a health professional to your class to talk about HIV. Ask him or her to explain the difference between common viruses and viruses like HIV, including the different ways they are spread. Also ask him or her to discuss the immune system and the role it plays in fighting different viruses. Ask students to prepare questions in advance. Have them write reports about what they learned. They can also make posters to highlight what they learned. Post these in class or around the school, if possible.
