Page 2—We all use electricity. Ask students to create an electricity time line. This time line can begin in the 18th century with Benjamin Franklin’s lightning experiments and lead up to the energy innovations of today. You may also want to have students imagine how electricity will be generated and used in the future. Next, assign groups of students to work on a report for each of the major milestones on the time line. Invite a representative from your local electric utility to speak to the class about the way that your community generates and distributes electricity. Ask him or her to discuss the concepts of: • voltage—the force of electricity in a wire • amperes (amps)—the amount of electricity in a watt • watts—the measurement of how much electrical power appliances need in order to work properly. Also have the representative discuss how an electric meter works to measure the power used by a home. Encourage students to come up with questions ahead of time.
