Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® Drugs are dumb! The activities below can help reinforce the material in this Know What? ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to drugs and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more. Page 2—Drugs?—No thanks! This workbook generally uses the term “drugs” to refer to illegal substances such as marijuana, cocaine, etc. However, it is important for children to know that medicines are drugs, too. Consider doing a mini-lesson on medicine safety. You can include the following points: • Medicine is not candy, no matter what it tastes like or what the package looks like. • Only take medicine at the proper times and in the proper amount. • Only take medicine from your health-care provider or parent. Defining drugs as substances that can make changes in your mind and body can help your students understand how medicines and illegal drugs are, in one sense, part of the same class. Consider inviting a local law enforcement officer to your class. Ask him or her to discuss the legal consequences of using drugs. He or she may want to discuss drugs not mentioned on this page, such as “meth,” that may be a problem in your community. Afterwards, you may want to have students write about what they learned.
