The activities below can help reinforce the material in this What’s Up ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to self-esteem and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 2—Letter to the editor Ask students to list the magazines they read on a regular basis. Have them bring in samples for the class to look at. Discuss with students what they like and dislike about the magazines. Call attention to the ads and articles that feature young people. Do students feel these portrayals are accurate? Representative of themselves? Finally, have students express their opinions about the magazines in e-mails or letters to the editor. Write the responses on the board. If more than one student lists the same activity or skill, write a check mark next to the skill for each response. When the students have finished, discuss this list. Did a number of students list the same skills (sports, math, etc.)? Were there any skills or activities named by only one student? Help students brainstorm other interests they could pursue. Explain to students that there is a wide range of activities with which to distinguish themselves.
