Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® We know about renewable energy! The activities below can help reinforce the material in this Know What? ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to renewable energy and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. Page 2—Energy makes things work! Ask students to come up with a brief story about what their lives would be like without energy. As students tell the story, write it down on the board or an easel sheet. Print clearly. Next, have students read the story out loud to help build their reading skills. Ask if students know what fossils are. Explain that fossil fuels were made from fossils—remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. When the plants and animals died, they sank to the bottom of swamps and oceans. Sand and rock built up on top of their remains. Then, over millions of years, enormous pressure and heat turned them into coal, oil and gas. Print out photographs of fossils to show students. If possible, arrange a field trip to a local science museum. Invite a representative from the local power company to visit your classroom. Ask him or her to talk about how the power they sell is generated. Have the representative give special emphasis to renewable energy sources the utility is either currently using or plans to use in the future. Have children prepare questions to ask ahead of time.
