The activities below can help reinforce the material in this What’s Up ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to success in school. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Questions may include: • What is your favorite subject? • What is your least favorite subject? • Do you think what you’re learning in school now can help you later in life? If so, how? • What can students and teachers do to make classes more interesting? Have your class conduct the survey and tabulate the results. Consider having students present the results to your school’s administration. Ask him or her to discuss the classes students will take in high school and what standardized tests they will be expected to take. • Ask someone from the state Department of Labor to speak to your class about the job outlook in your state and what students can do now to increase their chances of getting a good job in the future. • Invite representatives from a local college, a technical or career school, an apprenticeship program and/or the military to discuss what students can do to be better prepared for higher education and career training.
