Page 2—Getting started Note: The green words that look like THIS in the workbook are intended to be used as vocabulary words (students may need your help pronouncing them). Discuss the possible risks that pedestrians face on streets, roads, sidewalks, crosswalks and in parking lots. Conduct a class writing exercise about the dangers of moving vehicles. For example, ask students to write about: • whether they’ve heard about or known someone who was hit by a vehicle (or almost hit) and what happened • how they think young people can keep themselves safer around roadways and vehicles • any spots they know where pedestrians should be extra careful (such as dangerous intersections, hidden driveways or high-speed streets). Ask students to volunteer some of their responses. Note and discuss any themes that emerge. Make the point that, while drivers of vehicles usually try to avoid crashes, it’s up to pedestrians to make smart choices and stay out of the way as much as possible.
