Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® We wash our hands! Page 2: Spreading germs Talk to students about how germs from their hands can get into their body if they touch their eyes, mouth or nose. Explain that they may touch these areas without even realizing it. For example, they may: • rub their eyes • wipe something from their mouth • scratch their nose. Ask students if they ever do any of these things. Encourage them to become more aware of how often they touch these areas. Also encourage them to try to break those habits, and to wash their hands if they catch themselves touching those areas. Reinforce that washing hands regularly can help them stay healthy. Ask students to write a brief story about a boy or girl and all the different things he or she touches in a day. Ask students to create 2 different endings. In one ending, the character washes his or her hands. In the other ending, he or she does not. Ask students to write about what happens to the character in each case. Have students read their stories to the class.
