Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® We are prepared for emergencies! The activities below can help reinforce the material in this Know What? ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to emergency preparedness and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy to learn more. Page 2—What is an emergency? Review the definition of “emergency” given on page 2 of the workbook. Ask students if there are other ways they might define this word. Write their ideas on the board. Discuss which type(s) of emergencies may be more likely than others to occur in your area, and why. (Be sure to emphasize that severe emergencies are not common.) When everyone has finished, ask the class what the key is to safety in an emergency (“being ready”). Tell them that this means being prepared in case an emergency occurs. Then, have students write a short paragraph (2-3 sentences) about something they have prepared for, or prepare for regularly. They might describe preparing for: • school (getting dressed, eating breakfast) • a trip (packing) • a doctor’s or dentist’s visit (talking with parent about what will happen) • hot or cold weather (dressing appropriately). Explain that preparation for a serious emergency has the same purpose as any type of preparation: to make an event easier or more comfortable if and when it happens.
