Invite a health-care professional, such as your school nurse, to speak about the dangers of smoking and inhaling secondhand smoke with your class. Ask him or her to explain that other products that contain tobacco (such as cigars, pipes and smokeless tobacco) or nicotine (such as e-cigarettes and vape pens) are also very harmful to the body. Finally, ask the speaker to talk about the importance of good nutrition, physical activity and sleep. Afterward, have the children write thank-you notes or draw pictures for the speaker. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1a,b CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.3 Supports Writing Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2 Page 4—Smoking stinks. Discuss some of the other risks of smoking with the children. These include: • loss of sense of smell and taste • more colds, lung infections and ear infections • getting out of breath quickly • increased heart rate. Ask the children what they think it would feel like to experience any of these health effects. Help students practice using the nouns and adjectives in this activity (e.g., breath, clothes, teeth, bad, smelly, yellow) to create complete sentences. Ask them to make up their own verbs to suit the sentences. Help them decide what letters should be capitalized and what type of end punctuation to use. They can practice writing the sentences with your help. Or you can write down the sentences for them.
