Page 2—You can be anything! Have a class discussion about all the different jobs students see people doing each day. Talk about those careers. Help students recognize the work they do as students, family members and members of the community. (You may choose to discuss the role of “homemaker” as an unpaid—but very important—job.) Together, review how a job description is written. As a group, write a student’s job description. Then, using the same format, have each student write a description for his or her dream job. Note: The words in green in the workbook are intended to be used as vocabulary words (students may need your help pronouncing them). Talk about how everyone has different interests and skills. Emphasize that skills also can be developed with hard work and perseverance. Arrange for teams of students to interview different professionals at your school, such as the principal, a counselor, the nurse or an art teacher. Ask the students to focus their interviews on what drew the person to his or her career, how it matches his or her interests, what skills he or she brought to it and what skills he or she had to learn. Have each team write an article about the person’s career path. After getting permission from each person interviewed, publish the articles in a careers newsletter or on a Web site created by the class.
