Encourage parents to use this guide to help their children get the most out of the activities in We Wonder . Help the children work as a group to research and learn about the many ways people and animals use water. When they are done, cut a slot in a shoebox cover and put the cover back on the box. Pass out 3" by 5" cards. Split the children into 3 groups. Have one group draw pictures of fun ways to use water, one group draw pictures of necessary ways to use water and the third group draw pictures of ways that plants and animals use water. Help the children write descriptions to go with the pictures. Then have children put the cards in the box. (They can submit more than one card.) Talk about the different responses as a class, stressing the difference between “wants” (fun use of water) and “needs” (necessary use of water). Supports Speaking & Listening Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b Supports Writing Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.7 CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.8 Page 4—Where does water come from? Fill a clean, dry glass with ice and cold water. Leave the glass alone for 15 minutes. When you return, ask children where they think the water on the outside of the glass has come from. It comes from the air through a process called condensation (the water vapor in the air changed to liquid when it touched the cold glass). Mark the water level, then leave the glass overnight. When you come in the next day, ask the children why they think there’s now less water in the glass. Explain it is because of a process called evaporation, which returns water in its liquid form back into the air. Supports Language Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.6 Supports Speaking & Listening Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b The activities below can help reinforce the material in this We Wonder ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to water conservation and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more.
