Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for ® We walk safely! The activities below can help reinforce the material in this Know What? ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to walking safely and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more. Page 2—Do you walk safely? Ask students what they think they need to do to walk safely. Write their answers on the board or a large sheet of paper. After finishing the workbook, go over all the answers together. Correct any that may be wrong. Ask if students would like to add anything they learned from the workbook. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.1.1b,c CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.2.1b,c Page 3—Walking safely is important. Ask students about any crashes or “close calls” they may have seen or heard about involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. Talk about why the crash or close call may have occurred. For example, was the driver going too fast? Or, was the pedestrian jaywalking? Help students make a chart listing reasons why a pedestrian might be at risk for being hit. Invite a local law enforcement officer to talk to the class about the importance of walking safely. Ask him or her to explain the common reasons pedestrians are involved in crashes—and how these types of crashes can be avoided. Later, ask students to compare the law enforcement officer’s answers with their own answers. Ask if students would like to add anything they learned to their chart.
