Invite a school nurse, dietitian or other health-care worker to talk to the children. He or she can talk about good nutrition, food groups, serving sizes and the importance of exercise and not skipping meals. Help the children think of questions to ask the speaker (for example: What foods are good for our bones? Our heart? Our eyes? Our teeth?). Afterward have the children write thank-you notes or draw pictures for the speaker. Talk about food diversity around the world. Introduce a few different cultures and talk about the climate and the foods that are grown and eaten in those regions. Find picture books that show the cultures’ foods or bring in samples for the children to taste. For example, foods from the United States include Florida oranges and Idaho potatoes. Foods from other countries include bananas from Ecuador and Swiss cheese from Switzerland. Have the children talk about family meal traditions. Ask them to have an adult at home write down a special family recipe. Have children create pictures to go with the recipes. Then ask each child to tell the class about his or her recipe and picture. Make a class cookbook using the recipes and pictures you collect. NOTE: Some children may have severe allergies to nuts and other foods. Before doing any activity that involves eating or touching foods, ask parents and caregivers about any food allergies their children may have.
