SEANTeacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 2—Parents Page Every We Wonder includes a guide for parents. Encourage parents to use this guide to help their children get the most out of the activities in We Wonder. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.3 Supports Counting & Cardinality Standards: CCSS.Mathematics.CC.K.1 CCSS.Mathematics.CC.K.5 Page 3—What are germs? Explain that sneezing is one way that our body gets rid of germs. To show how many germs there are in our nose and how fast they can spread, demonstrate a “sneeze” with a spray bottle. Fill the bottle with water (you can also add food coloring), and spray the water onto a piece of paper or the board. Then repeat the activity using a tissue. Hold the tissue in front of the bottle as you spray water onto a new sheet of paper. Show the children that using the tissue helps keep the germs from spreading. Help the children understand that once germs are on a surface, they can spread easily. For a group activity (to do outside or over a plastic or fabric sheet), fill 3 trays with water-based paint or glitter. Use one color for each tray. Give 3 children each a tray and ask the children to dip their hands in the paint or glitter. Explain to the children that each color represents each person’s germs. Then have each child shake hands with the other children in the room. (Before doing this activity, make sure all children wash their hands.) As all the children’s hands become covered with many different colors (“germs”), ask them other ways that germs could spread (for example, by touching toys or doorknobs). The activities below can help reinforce the material in this We Wonder ® workbook when used in the classroom. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to hand washing and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity.
