Teacher’s/Leader’s Guide for Page 2—Parents Page Every We Wonder includes a guide for parents. Encourage parents to use this guide to help their children get the most out of the activities in We Wonder. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.3 Supports Counting & Cardinality Standards: CCSS.Mathematics.CC.K.1 CCSS.Mathematics.CC.K.5 Page 3—Bullying is mean! Talk with children about the pictures on this page. Be sure they understand why the action in each bullying picture is wrong. Ask children to name other types of behaviors they might think of as bullying. Write their answers on a flip chart or the board. After finishing the activity book, have the children review the list to see if they want to add to it or change anything. Have groups of children work on “No Bullying” posters. Have each group pick a scene to draw for their poster (you may want to give some ideas), showing children getting along. Help each child in the group write his or her name on the poster. Supports Language Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.K.6 Supports Speaking & Listening Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1b Supports Writing Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.1 Pages 4 and 5—Feelings Talk with the children about the pictures on these 2 pages. Be sure they understand what is happening in each one. After looking at all the pictures, ask them to look at the pictures on page 4 again, and to suggest a way that the hurtful situation could be changed so the people are getting along and feeling happy. It is important for young children to develop the ability to consider others’ feelings. Talk with them about whether they have ever felt bullied and, if so, how it made them feel. (Be sure they do not use any names.) Also talk about situations where they have gotten along well with people and how that made them feel. Help children draw a series of feelings pictures on cards that can be displayed. Help them write their name on a separate card and then post these. Each day, have each child pick the feeling card for how he or she is feeling that day and put it up under his or her name. You may want to allow them to change their cards during the day, if how they are feeling changes. At the end of each day, talk about how they are feeling at that point—and if it has changed, what the reason was.
