Invite a representative from your local or state health department to talk to the children about lead. He or she can talk about what lead is, where it might be found and things children can do to avoid exposure to lead. Help the children think of questions to ask the speaker. For example: • How do you know if there is lead in your home?  • If there is lead in your home, how would you get rid of it? Then have the children write thank-you notes or draw pictures for the speaker. Supports Speaking & Listening Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.1a,b CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.K.3 Supports Writing Standard: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.K.2 Page 4—Not in your mouth! Give each child 2 pieces of paper and some crayons or markers. Ask the children to draw a picture of something they should not put in their mouths (such as toys or dirt) on one piece of paper. Ask them to draw a picture of something that is OK to put in their mouths (such as fruits and vegetables) on the other piece of paper. When the children are done with their drawings, sit together in a circle. Ask each child to hold up his or her picture for the other children to see. Ask the children if they can guess what the pictures are. After all children have shared their pictures, ask them why some things should not go in their mouths (because those things may contain lead, which could make them sick). Then ask why it is OK to put food in their mouths (because food helps them grow and stay healthy).
