Use this activity to help children understand why they need shots. Ask children if they have ever been sick. Ask them to describe how they felt when they were sick. (For example: Did they have a headache? Stomachache? Bad cough?) Explain how childhood diseases such as chickenpox and polio are similar to and different from common illnesses such as the common cold. (For example: They are alike because all diseases can make you sick and miss school. They are different because certain diseases— listed on the shot chart on the back cover of the workbook—can be prevented by shots. Others, such as the cold, cannot.) Help children learn more about some of the diseases that can be prevented with shots by doing online research together. Some kid-friendly sites to visit include: • http://kidshealth.org/kid/ill_injure/sick/chicken_ pox.html • http://kidshealth.org/kid/h1n1_center/flu-basics/ flu.html • http://kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/infection/ hepatitis.html. As you read about each disease, point to its name and help children sound out the syllables to learn how it is pronounced.
