Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to starting high school and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. From the first few pages of the workbook, have students choose 1 area they’re most apprehensive about. For example, it may be getting used to new students, teachers, surroundings, procedures and classes. Have students keep a journal about their progress in that area. Have them write the first entry as soon as possible (such as before they start school), then other entries after 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, in the middle of the school year and at the end of the year. Have them complete the assignment with a final essay on the changes they experienced. Have them interview the older students about how to best prepare for high school. For example, your students may be advised to: • buy certain supplies • visit the school building several times • meet some teachers. After the meetings, have a class discussion about advice given. You may want to have the older students continue serving as mentors throughout the school year.
