Invite a law enforcement officer or a school crossing guard to speak about the rules of pedestrian safety. He or she can talk about the right and wrong ways to cross a street, railroad crossing safety, the importance of having a “walking buddy” and ways to avoid strangers. Take a safety walk with the children. Use the building or playground to make a pretend route to a bus stop. Have the children hold hands with a walking buddy. Choose different objects to be pretend “streets” (for example, trees and swing sets) and have the children practice what they would do if they were real streets. Remind them to look for a crosswalk before crossing and to keep holding hands. Have them practice looking each way several times before crossing. Tell them never to take shortcuts through woods or empty lots and to stay on sidewalks at all times. When you arrive at the pretend bus stop, have the children practice waiting for the bus. Remind them to: • arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early • wait for the bus away from the street • stand in a line quietly and avoid horseplay • wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and stand in place until the driver opens the door and waves them on. Many are experiential, helping students work together to better understand issues related to school bus safety and to improve skills needed for success in school and life. You can also use these activities to help students meet select Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts (CCSS.ELA) and for Mathematics (CCSS.Mathematics). Correlations to specific standards are listed below each activity. Visit www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy and www.corestandards.org/Math to learn more.
